Geothermal response testing for closed-loop systems
Key parameters in the design of a ground-source heat-pump system are the ground thermal parameters and borehole heat-exchanger construction. These parameters (soil thermal capacity and conductivity, far field temperature, borehole resistance, effects of ground water flow) are difficult to estimate from general soil information. Thermal response tests (TRTs) have been developed to measure these key parameters on an actual field installation.

In 1949, the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB) was a barely-explored resource. A young drilling rig industry sought a foothold on the western Canadian prairie and saw a prosperous future. This included six drilling contractors with larger ambitions: to create an oppor-tunity for the industry to improve itself uniformly as it grew. They envisioned a meeting place where drilling rig contractors could set aside their competitive spirit and work in cooperation on common issues.

Canada: IPI masters the Arctic
Canada has experienced an unprecedented level of mineral exploration in the past few years. The demands on exploration-drilling projects have increased with greater depths in extreme, remote locations, often in the Arctic. And, while conducting a basic drilling programme in these conditions is challenging enough, today’s mineral-exploration programmes go far beyond simply pulling core out of the ground. Companies are taking a multi-discipline approach, combining orebody evaluation, geotechnical characterisation and the collection of baseline environmental data.
