Police HQ proves its worth

In 2005, the new Gloucester Police HQ became a renewable-energy pioneer when it used a ground-source heat-pump (GSHP) system for heating and cooling. Not only was it the largest ground-source heating-and-cooling system installed in a UK building to date, but it was also the first to be fitted in a building being built under a Private Finance Initiative. Full story...

Geothermal response testing for closed-loop systems

Key parameters in the design of a ground-source heat-pump system are the ground thermal parameters and borehole heat-exchanger construction. These parameters (soil thermal capacity and conductivity, far field temperature, borehole resistance, effects of ground water flow) are difficult to estimate from general soil information. Thermal response tests (TRTs) have been developed to measure these key parameters on an actual field installation. Full story...

Volume underground

Underground production-drilling rigs are divided between those that use top-hammer technology and those that use down-the-hole (DTH), which was previously only used in surface drilling. As DTH use has developed in the underground market, the term in-the-hole (ITH) has been used to describe the underground application specifically, which is largely what is used in this article, though the two are often used interchangeably in the market. Full story...
