Geothermal exploration in the Rhineland

A 500m geothermal borehole has been drilled in Weisweiler, Germany, with a second well due within a few months. The purpose of the wells is to expand knowledge about the subsurface and its suitability for deep geothermal energy. In addition, the research team wants to install a deep geothermal probe there, the energy of which can be tapped into via a heat pump. In the medium term, this would bring to light deep heat – renewable energy that is to be used to heat the research buildings that have yet to be built.
