Work is set to begin in the north of England on a scheme that draw geothermal energy from abandoned flooded mines to heat council-owned buildings, including a residential tower block.

An innovative scheme that will draw geothermal energy from abandoned flooded mines to heat council-owned buildings has been given the green light in South Tyneside

The multi-million-pound Hebburn minewater scheme in South Tyneside has been granted planning permission for the initial testing phase, which will see two wells drilled to extract water from the mines.
