Take it all away - Trailer options from Talbert

When it comes to moving drill rigs between job sites heavy-duty solutions can be called for. In order to meet the needs of specialist sectors such as the drilling industry, US company Talbert Manufacturing has numerous low-loader trailer options available.

Talbert Manufacturing, a North American leader in specialised heavy-haul solutions, updated its 60CC/55SA-LD trailer for increased flexibility to meet differing hauling regulations this year.

This unique trailer showcases a new hydraulically operated system to allow operation of the third axle only or a combination of third and fourth axles. The 60CC/55SA-LD also features an industry-leading 18in loaded deck height — 2in lower than competitive models — and 6in ground clearance. It also gives operators the ability to switch between configurations, for state-of-the-art load versatility and limiting the need for additional permitting.

One example of Talbert's flexibility is a customized 3+1 configuration of the 60CC/55SA-LD trailer designed to be under 53ft overall length with a 28ft deck length and tandem axle trailer with provisions for a third and fourth axle capable of a two, three, four and three plus one axle configuration set up. Capacity for various configurations are: 55t in 10ft two-point rigid load base with 108in swing and four axles close coupled; 55t in 13ft two-point rigid load base with 132in swing and 3+1 E1Nitro axle extension; and 60t in 13ft two-point rigid load base with 108in swing and four axles close coupled.

"When you look at the overall size of heavy-haul loads, a couple of inches might not seem consequential; but to our customers, those 2ins can make a world of difference," said Troy Geisler, Talbert vice president of sales and marketing.

Heavy-haul innovations

"Talbert has always been at the forefront of heavy-haul innovations, providing the trailers customers need to operate safely and efficiently in industries around the world. The 60CC/55SA-LD offers these operators the flexibility they need with a single trailer."

The base model of the 60CC/55SA-LD features a 108in swing radius, 26ft deck length and 8ft-6in deck width. Additional customization is possible, including a 24in flip gooseneck extension that increases swing radius to 132in and allows greater load transfer capabilities.

Like all Talbert trailers, the 60CC/55SA-LD offers an industry-leading deck capacity rating. With a four-axle, close-coupled configuration, it provides a 55t capacity in 10ft and 60t in half the deck length. It is also rated for 55t in half the deck length with a 132in swing radius and 3+1 configuration with the E1Nitro axle extension system. This innovative system uses a combination of hydraulic fluid and nitrogen to equalize axle pressures, providing proportionate weight distribution of each axle grouping to optimise the range of suspension movement and minimize stress for a smoother ride.

Modular trailer

Alongside the 60CC/55SA-LD, Talbert also offers the modular 65t 65SA trailer. This innovative unit takes advantage of Talbert's custom-engineering experience to incorporate multiple axle configurations based on customer requirements for optimum versatility.

The trailer's unique design features a flip extension to accommodate a tandem- or tri-axle jeep dolly, allowing for maximum load configurations. It can also pair with Talbert's E2 or E3Nitro axle extension, which dampens axle movement and controls load transfer.

The modular trailer maintains a 65t rating at half the deck length with a 16in loaded side deck height and 6in loaded road clearance.

"Every day, loads are getting bigger, wider and heavier," said Geisler. "On top of that, government agencies are pushing for stricter controls to protect ageing infrastructure. To help our customers stay ahead of the curve — to run safely and efficiently, no matter their area of operation — Talbert has always offered first-class engineering and industry-leading versatility. The 65SA Modular Trailer is designed to help operators adjust axle configurations to fit the specific requirements of the load and the road."

The 65t Modular Trailer is individually engineered for customised axle configurations including 2+3+2, 3+3+2 or other variations. For example, adding a tri-axle jeep allows a 3+3+3 configuration. Featuring 60.5in axle spacing, as well as an airlift on axle three and a chain lift on axles one, two, four and five, the trailer is capable of running with three, four, or five axles in a row without a booster. The base model offers a 120in swing radius with connections for up to 70in gooseneck extension and can be custom-designed to provide a larger swing radius if necessary.

ENitro system

Talbert's E2 or E3Nitro axle extension can also be engineered into the design. This innovative technology uses a combination of hydraulic fluid and nitrogen to equalize axle pressures, providing proportionate weight distribution of each axle grouping. It optimises the range of suspension movement, which minimises stress and provides a smooth ride.

In addition, the ENitro system features a bearing pivot and pivot lockout for backing the trailer. Users can also hydraulically lock in axle loads regardless of the terrain. The E2Nitro comes standard with two-speed dual landing gear for optimal stability when disconnected from the trailer.

Offering a 28ft deck length, the 65t Modular Trailer is rated for 65t in a three-axle configuration. Capacity increases to 70t in 15ft with a four-axle close-coupled configuration. The trailer can also be designed to accommodate an additional 10 or 15ft section of deck, varying in type from beam to drop side.

"While every Talbert trailer is built to customer specifications, the 65SA is one of our most adaptable models," Geisler said. "Adding additional axles after the fact can't increase capacity but factoring in these options during design allows our engineers to provide maximum flexibility with Talbert's unmatched strength, reliability and longevity."

Like all its trailers, Talbert manufactures the 65SA Modular Trailer with heavy-duty T-1, 100,000psi minimum yield steel for extreme durability and longevity. Talbert trailers are standard with Valspar R-Cure 800 paint to prevent corrosion, offering a long-lasting finish and better return on investment.
