New construction methods could unlock housing developments in rural Scotland

More environmentally friendly methods for laying housing foundations on peatland could pave the way for increased economic development in parts of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, while mitigating disruption to the natural ecosystem and captured carbon dioxide.

Alternative foundation methods, including timber piles, are being explored to allow peatland to be retained when new housing is built in rural and remote Scottish locations
