Ground improvement works at Europe's largest can manufacturing facility

Van Elle has begun work on the installation of over 16,000 No. vibro stone columns to support Crown’s largest manufacturing facility for beverage cans in Europe at a site in Peterborough in the UK.

Four low emission, vibro stone column rigs and two pre-boring rigs are being used by Van Elle to install 16,000 No. vibro stone columns at a site in the UK

Van Elle's ground improvement team began installing the vibro stone columns for main contractor ISG at the end of July at the 625,000sqft project, using four of the Group's low emission vibro stone column rigs, as well as two pre-boring rigs.

The stone columns will be spaced on varying grids to provide uniform bearing capacities ranging from 60kN/m2 to 150kN/m2, supporting the proposed foundations and ground bearing slabs, which make up the complex foundation and slab design tailored to accommodate various manufacturing equipment and processes.

Vibro stone columns are one of the UK's most commonly specified ground improvement methods and they offer a highly economical and sustainable alternative to piling and deep foundation solutions. Removing the need to bypass problem ground by densifying and strengthening weak or poorly compacted soils in situ.
