The Emirates Steel Arkan ultra-low emission Green Steel sheet piles have been verified as generating just 350kg of CO2 per tonne produced - 40% less carbon than that generated by the processes of other manufacturers, according to an Engie Impact Benchmarking Study. The industry average of carbon generated by primary steel production within the global steel industry is 1910kg of CO2 per tonne.

The cradle-to-gate life cycle analysis underpinning all of the Green Steel figures was also rigorously reviewed and endorsed by an independent carbon auditor, in accordance with ISO 14025 and EN 15804 standards.

Following the announcement of the Green Steel certification, Sheet Piling UK, as the exclusive steel piling partner of Emirates Steel Arkan (ESA) in the UK and Ireland, is now even better placed to drive the decarbonisation agenda within British construction and infrastructure works. By supplying these Green Steel sheet piles to contractors across the UK and Ireland, the company hopes to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy.

A holistic approach

ESA's Green Steel sheet piles benefit from a holistic approach from the Abu Dhabi-based manufacturers, which is fuelled by a dedication to producing sustainable steel and a series of meaningful environmental initiatives. Its sustainable sheet piles leverage the electric arc furnace (EAF) production process at the plant but also benefit from the use of clean electricity, an advanced carbon capture process and the integrated and strategic reuse of scrap and slag.

Of the total electricity used within the process 80% is now from clean sources, meaning that ESA's Green Steel production is primarily powered by clean energy.

State-of-the-art technology and smart digital solutions are also incorporated into the production process, while scrap and slag are utilised as raw materials for steel and building products.

Industrial carbon capture

ESA is also the first global steel manufacturer to capture carbon emissions on an industrial scale, thanks to its ground-breaking CCS scheme, in partnership with the Al Reyadah Carbon Capture, Utility and Storage Facility. The methodology used captures up to 800,000t of CO2, which is the equivalent of removing the emissions from 170,000 cars.

Sheet Piling UK's managing director, Andrew Cotton, said: "We are delighted to be able to help the UK construction sector slash the carbon footprint of projects, by providing sheet piles which are 40% greener than their counterparts. This will make a massive difference to sustainability within the industry and help drive the low-carbon economy. The Green Steel sheet piles that we can supply should be the first choice for any client for whom ESG principles matter and who need to demonstrate to shareholders that they are serious about sustainable development."
