Bauer Technologies wins major geotechnical project at York Central

Bauer Technologies’ latest project win - York Central – is one of the largest city centre brownfield regeneration sites in England, spanning 45ha of land.

The York Central project requires Bauer Technologies to design and install a range of piling solutions, which include full displacement columns, full displacement piles and CFA piles. These key infrastructural elements will support embankments to carry a new road over the East Coast Mainline Railway to the west of York Station.

In line with Bauer Technologies' commitment to environmental stewardship, the York Central project will embody several sustainability initiatives. All Bauer Technologies equipment deployed on-site will use hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO), significantly reducing the project's carbon footprint.

This venture represents a pivotal step in our journey towards smarter, more sustainable infrastructure development

The design approach is meticulously planned to be ‘smart', with piling techniques that produce minimal to no spoil for disposal.

Efforts are also in place to minimise concrete waste, with concrete mixes having a high replacement of CEM1, thus further enhancing the project's sustainability profile.

Bauer Technologies is undertaking the project in collaboration with John Sisk & Son, the main contractor for the infrastructure works on York Central. The project, led by Homes England and Network Rail, has secured £135million in public sector funding to unlock the site for private investment and future development. The complete infrastructure works include circa two miles of new access roads, embankments and bridges with associated pedestrian, cycle, rail, and vehicular access routes within the site.

Speaking about the project, Paul Doyle, MD at Bauer Technologies, said: "Innovating for a sustainable future, the York Central project not only showcases Bauer Technologies' commitment to advanced geotechnical engineering but also its dedication to environmentally responsible practices. Our team worked hard to value engineer the original design to deliver a more cost-effective solution for the client, and this venture represents a pivotal step in our journey towards smarter, more sustainable infrastructure development, paving the way for a greener, more efficient world."
