Bauer began the construction of the tunnel in mid-2009, using the top-down method, while open-cut tunnelling was utilised for the Kiesselbach-Platz area. The walls of the tunnel consist of secant bored piles, and up to 21m-deep excavations were necessary for the operating stations and emergency exits.

The foundation works carried out by Bauer Spezialtiefbau included the installation of 10,091 piles, with diameters ranging from 900mm to 1,500mm, a 28,000m2 soldier pile wall, 780 support columns in piles with 1,500mm diameter, 25,000m tie-back anchoring, and the additional jet grouting and steel bracing.

The bored piles were installed using different rotary drilling rigs manufactured by Bauer Maschinen. Up to the end of construction work, sometimes as many as six rigs were in use simultaneously.

The tunnel will help solve the difficult traffic conditions in the southwest of Munich. Restoration of the surface area and the construction of a park will be completed by 2017. The total cost of this construction in the Bavarian capital amounted to €398.5 million (US$440 million).
