A new S-Wireline coring barrel was unveiled at the Geotechnica 2026 trade fair in Warwickshire, UK, yesterday, with John Lawrie Tubulars new JLT 146S system attracting attention from visitors and drilling exhibitors alike.
S-Wireline is widely considered a benchmark for high production drilling, with crews expecting premium 100mm samples.
However, quality costs. And the wireline method can increase tooling wear, resulting in downtime cause by seized heads, poor lubrication and premature component failure.
The JLT-146S, fully compatible with most existing tooling systems, features a new head designed to extend service life and further improve drilling efficiency.
This is by way of advanced internal grease channels to ensure all shaft bearings are sufficiently lubricated, while reducing the amount of grease required.
Another development is inclusion of integrated ball bearing non-return valves to keep samples clean, consistent and undisturbed.
Available with a range of industry-standard top-ridge profiles, the new barrel follows "considerable" investment to meet market demand for a "complete S-Wireline solution built to perform under pressure".
The Montrose, Scotland-based firm said it has worked closely with drillers across the UK to engineer a "smarter system to solve the hidden frustrations and operational costs faced on site every day".
Chris White, John Lawrie's, geotechnical sales manager, said every component is machined from premium high-tensile steel to ensure consistent quality, strength and reliability.
