Above and below ground infrastructure at Anglo America's Woodsmith Mine project near Whitby, on the UK's North Yorkshire coast, is underway, with local firm Salko UK set to rollout mechanical and electrical packages over the next five years.

Salko secured a contract extension with Redpath Deilmann – which is constructing what will be Europe's deepest mineshaft – and will deploy an 80-strong team to deliver an extensive workscope. This includes EC&I, pipework, ventilation, shaft services and critical power systems through to strategic installation, planning, EHS and quality compliance services.

Located within the North York Moors National Park, Woodsmith Mine has been designed to extract POLY4, a naturally occurring, low-carbon polyhalite fertiliser, that will support sustainable agriculture.

Once fully operational, the mine is expected to produce up to 13mt of POLY4 per year and is set to deliver significant economic and environmental benefits due to the reduced carbon footprint associated with the product compared to traditional fertiliser production.

Sim Sharphouse, Operations Manager at Salko UK, said: "We're proud to have played a crucial role in this globally significant project based in Yorkshire. Extending our contract is a proud moment for our team and serves as a testament to our continued partnership.

In December last year, the TBM Stella Rose reached 30km continuing to break the world record for the longest single TBM tunnel.
